A former Newcastle United goalkeeper, Shaka Hislop has claimed that David De Gea is still the best goalkeeper in the Premier League.

This is despite the arrival of Alisson Becker to Liverpool in the summer.

De Gea has been in the PFA Team of the Year for four out of the last five seasons.

The 27-year-old had a poor World Cup this summer, with Spain crashing out in the group stages.

But the former England goalkeeper still believes the Manchester United man is the best in the English top flight.

“Despite a disappointing World Cup, that’s putting it nicely, David De Gea has been the Premier League’s best by a country mile for the last three or four years,” Hislop told ESPN FC.

“And despite the performances of Ederson over the last season and a touch, and Alisson over the last few games, if I’m picking a team right now, I’d still go with David De Gea.”

Alisson joined Liverpool for £66.8million from Roma in July

He made a huge error in the 2-1 win over Leicester on Saturday.

But Hislop still found a place in his top three when ranking the keepers in England.

“Despite his risky play and despite the error on the weekend, I still have him (Alisson) in the top three,” Hislop said.

“At his best, he continues to show that he’s an outstanding goalkeeper.

“One of the best in the world, never mind just the Premier League.

“But yes, does like life on the edge. That’s about as nicely as I can phrase it.”

Alisson is the Brazil No 1, keeping Manchester City’s Ederson on the bench.

But when it comes to club football, Hislop puts Ederson ahead of his rival.

“Ederson for Manchester City, simply outstanding for the last couple of seasons,” he added.

“He also likes life on the edge, not as close to the edge as Alisson quite clearly.

“I know people are going to be saying ‘well Alisson got the nod over Ederson in terms of the Brazil squad and Alisson has been Brazil’s No 1 for the last two or three seasons’.

“But in terms of the Premier League and what we’ve seen so far, and yes it’s only a few games in, I’d give Ederson the nod over Alisson.”
