Kogi Assembly makes U-turn, accepts ex-Speaker back to chamber
Two months after declaring the seat of the immediate past Speaker of Kogi State House of Assembly, Alhaji Umar Ahmed Imam vacant, the House on Wednesday reversed its decision, and call him back into the hallowed chamber.
Recall that, the seat of the former Speaker who is currently representing Lokoja I was declared vacant on 7th August 2018 following his defection to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the eve of the Kogi State bye-election.
The decision of the House was followed by two separate letters sent to the Assembly by the former Speaker and the Kogi State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Abdullahi Bello, announcing Imam’s reunion with the All Progressive Congress (APC).
Imam in the letter which was read by the current Speaker, Prince Mathew Kolawole noted that, his decision to rejoin the ruling All progressive Congress was born out of a genuine reconciliation with the leadership of the party in the State.
He thanked the executive Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello for his role in ensuring the internal wrangling is put to rest for the success in the forthcoming general election.
While supporting the house for reversing its earlier decision, the Majority Leader, Kogi State House of Assembly, Abdullahi Hassan Bello, told his colleagues that the former Speaker deserves to come back into the hallowed chamber, adding that, his wealth of experience is needed for the progress of the party and the state in general.
” Be it, therefore, resolved by this Honourable House that, the resolution passed on Tuesday, the 7th day of August, 2018 vacating the seat of Lokoja I State Constituency be accordingly reversed and made officially ineffective,” he noted.
