A retired Assistant Commissioner of Police, Alade Taiwo Opoola has decried the proliferation of political parties in the country, calling the huge number “pure madness that must be checked.”

He made the comment at the Afrikanwatch Media post mid-year lecture titled, “2019 General Election: The Roles Of Security Agencies And Other Stakeholders” and held under the chairmanship of another retired Assistant Director of DSS, Mr. Dennis Amachree (MON) in Yaba, Lagos.

Opoola said, “The 91 political parties is a pure madness because that can’t stabilise Nigeria. We need only two parties and we must return to that system now, so, it will be either one belongs to the left or the right. It is the best for us as a country. Look at the U.S., they have the Democratic and the Republican parties; in U.K., you have the Labour and the Conservative parties. They know what they are doing and we just have all the political parties in Nigeria with no direction and no ideology.”Amachree on his part, commented on the use of electronic system in the conduct of the election; saying, “it will be difficult but there is no time to begin than now.”

On the Ekiti governorship election where cases of votes buying was alleged he tasked the INEC to device effective means of tackling that as doing that will add credibility to the outcome of the election.
